Britain’s Transport Secretary Grant Shapps will stand as a candidate to succeed Prime Minister Boris Johnson, he has told the Sunday Times newspaper, joining the succession race along with several juniors.
Grant has ruled out a national election, but if he wins he will issue an emergency budget within the first 100 days to cut taxes for the most vulnerable and provide government support to energy-intensive companies, the Sunday Times said in an article published on the newspaper’s website today.
“(…) We must be a strategic government, sober in its analysis and not chasing the next front page,” Shapps told the paper.
The Sunday Times reported that Mr Sapps’ aim was to tackle the cost of living crisis and rebuild Britain’s economy to be the biggest in Europe by 2050.
