The British government today announced new measures aimed at better dealing with and prevention of so -called “honor crimes”, as many such incidents have shocked public opinion in recent years. The term “honor crimes” relates to any form of violence against women and girls mainly by members of their family and with the aim of defending the traditional code of honor. “For a long time these devastating crimes, including murders (…), amputation of female genitals and forced marriages, were allowed to occur in the shadow,” the interior ministry said in a statement. According to ministry data, the phenomenon is not particularly widespread in Britain, but for the best of it, the government will present a new legal definition of “honor crimes” in order to capture more perpetrators and be able to better protect women and girls from violence.
