Boris Johnson and his wife, Carrie, no longer plan to host a big reception for their wedding at the end of the month at the prime minister’s country house in Checkers, Downing Street sources said today.
The arrangement of this party at Checkers, a 16th-century mansion with an indoor swimming pool in north-west London, sparked a backlash when it became known after Johnson resigned on Thursday. Johnson was driven to the exit after a major crisis of confidence marked by the departure of around 60 members of his government within 48 hours. But he clarified that he will remain in Downing Street until his successor is named, a process expected to take several weeks.
Some accused him that his sole purpose was to “save” the reception, since he had already sent out the invitations.
“Hooking up, for one last party,” the Daily Mirror newspaper said on its front page today, with a photo of the couple from their wedding in May 2021.
However, according to Downing Street sources, the Johnsons are looking for a new place to receive their guests.
58-year-old Boris and 34-year-old Carrie married last year in Westminster Cathedral, in a close family circle. The couple have two children, Wilfred, 2, and Romy, 7 months. For Johnson, who has at least five other children, this is the third marriage.
