The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson will travel to Finland and Sweden tomorrow, Wednesday, two countries that are preparing to announce whether they will apply to join NATO, on the occasion of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The subject of this trip “will not be only Ukraine but the security of Europe in general,” said a Downing Street spokesman.
“We support the democratic ability of countries to decide on issues such as NATO membership,” he continued. “We understand the position of Sweden and Finland, so the prime minister will discuss security issues in general,” he said.
In Finland, where, according to a Yle public television poll, 76% of citizens are in favor of NATO membership, President Sauli Niinisto will announce his “personal” opinion on the issue on Thursday. The position of Prime Minister Sana Marin’s Social Democratic Party will be announced by Saturday at the latest.
In Sweden, which appears more reluctant than Finland, the ruling Social Democratic Party will announce its decision this Sunday, ten days earlier than originally planned.
