Britain: Johnson’s succession process is picking up speed

The process to choose British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s replacement is picking up speed today, with four candidates stepping up their bid to be in the top two in a decisive leadership battle that is dividing the ruling Conservative Party.

Since Johnson announced he was stepping down earlier this month after his scandal-plagued government lost the support of many Conservatives, the other candidates have turned their sights on the front-runner, former finance minister Rishi Sunak.

Four candidates remain in contention, with one dropping out later today. Sunak’s allies say his lead all but guarantees him a spot between the two front-runners.

But Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is closing the gap on second-placed Trade Secretary Penny Mordant, and the rankings could change as Tory MPs decide who to back after their preferred candidates drop out.

The four candidates — with former Secretary of State for Local Government, Faith and Communities Kemi Beidenock in fourth place — are hoping to win more votes in today’s Conservative Party ballot. The result will be announced at 17.00 Greek time.
