Britain: Life sentence for the man who murdered MP Ames

LAST UPDATE: 15.31

Islamic State-inspired “Islamist fanatic” Ali Harbi Ali was sentenced today to life in prison without parole for the murder of veteran British MP David Eimes.

Announcing the sentence against 26-year-old Ali, Judge Nigel Sweeney said he had “no doubt” about the need for life imprisonment without parole for the murder of Ames, who stabbed him to death in an attack on a church. its voters.

“This is a murder that has struck the heart of our democracy,” he said, adding that it was an “unusual case”.

Ali, a British national and the son of a former Somali prime minister’s media adviser, stabbed Ames to death in an attack last October in retaliation for what he said was his support for the airstrikes in Syria.

Ali was convicted Monday of murder and plotting terrorist acts, with the court taking less than half an hour to reach a verdict.

Life imprisonment without the possibility of release is very rare in the United Kingdom. He was last sentenced last September to Officer Wayne Cousins, who was found guilty of killing Londoner Sarah Everard, and to the killer of far-right MP Joe Cox, the far-right Thomas Meyer.
