Spies in the United States and Britain have won a spy victory over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to launch a major offensive against a European state since World War II, the British intelligence chief has said.
Putin addressed the Russian people in the early hours of February 24, ordering a “special military operation” against Ukraine, just 24 hours after recognizing the areas of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine.
For months, US and British ministers and security sources in the West have warned that Russia could invade Ukraine. They escalated warnings that an invasion was imminent in the weeks and days before Putin’s announcement.
In the wake of the Russian invasion, Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations, citing anti-Russian hysteria or misinformation aimed at dragging Putin into a war.
“The American and British intelligence communities have revealed Putin’s plans for Ukraine,” said Richard Moore, head of MI6, in a Twitter post.
“We have exposed his attempts to organize ‘provocations’, fake attacks to justify his invasion,” Moore said. “This decision was a long-planned, unprovoked, fierce aggression.”
The apparent insistence of British and American spies on Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is in stark contrast to the untrue information used to justify the 2003 US invasion of Iraq.
