Britain: Mutation spreading to South Africa considered ‘most important to date’

Britain announced today that the new strain of coronavirus that is spreading in South Africa is considered by scientists to be the most important that has been identified so far and therefore it needs to be determined whether or not it makes vaccines ineffective.

Defending a ban on flights from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Eswatini, British Transport Minister Grand Saps said the lesson from COVID-19 is that timely action is essential.

The British Health and Safety Administration has announced that the newly found coronavirus strain, called B.1.1.529, has a spike protein that is very different from that of the original strain of the new coronavirus on which the vaccines were based.

“As the scientists have described it, (this) is the most important variant strain they have come across to date in their research,” Saps said in a statement to Sky News.

Officials have advised the British government that it needs to act immediately and proactively if concerns about the impact of the new coronavirus variant are confirmed, although it may take weeks to gather all the information it needs on its characteristics.

The new coronavirus variant has also been found in Botswana and Hong Kong, but according to the UK Health and Safety Service, no cases have been reported in Britain.
