The British health authorities announced on Thursday that 50,867 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed in the previous 24 hours and another 148 patients had died due to complications of COVID-19.
The new coronavirus pandemic has claimed the lives of 146,135 people out of a total of 10,660,981 infections in the United Kingdom. The official death toll includes only those who died within 28 days of being diagnosed with the virus.
7,347 patients with COVID-19 are currently being treated in British hospitals.
At the same time, the cases of the Omicron variant – or B.1.1.529 – that were diagnosed amounted to 249 in 24 hours, with their total doubling to 817.
The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had estimated on Wednesday afternoon that the rate of doubling of the cases of this most contagious variant could be two to three days, but yesterday’s data show that he was rather optimistic. Health Minister Sajid Javid warns that Omicron’s cases may have exceeded one million by 2021.
Most of the cases reported in the current period are believed to be of the Delta variant.
In the face of the continuing and escalating health crisis, the Tory government has announced tougher measures, the so-called “Plan B”, but Mr. Johnson assures that he is not even considering a new lockdown.
Over 89% of people over the age of 12 have received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and over 81% have been fully vaccinated in the UK. The administration of booster doses, which exceeded 37% of the target population, continues.
