Britain: Nearly 89,000 people want to host Ukrainian refugees

Nearly 89,000 people in Britain have expressed a desire to host Ukrainian refugees, the day after the British government launched a refugee reception program.

This morning, 88,712 people had expressed interest, according to a statement to AFP of the British Ministry in charge of this program.

Those who decide to receive Ukrainian refugees in their homes will receive 350 350 (€ 418) a month and will have to commit to hosting them for at least six months. Refugees who will benefit from this program, who will need to obtain an entry visa, will be able to live and work in Britain for up to three years, but will also benefit from social benefits.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine pushed almost three million people into exile.

The government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, which has been criticized for being slow and for issuing low-entry visas – 4,600 according to figures released today – as well as for the complexity of the initial process that has since been simplified, is working to change of course.

The British government is also working to “verify the proper use of the confiscated goods” in the context of sanctions imposed on individuals close to the Russian leadership in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine, a spokesman for Boris Johnson said yesterday.
