Britain reported 183,037 cases of COVID-19 today, a new record, with 50,000 more infections than the previous high recorded a day earlier, according to government figures.
The increase in cases triggered by the highly contagious Omicron variant also coincides with an increase in the number of coronavirus patients in hospitals.
Despite the growing number of cases, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he will not impose new restrictions on Britain this year to limit the spread of Omicron, which currently accounts for 90% of all infections in the community, according to health officials.
The figures, which include five-day data for Northern Ireland due to discrepancies in the Christmas record, showed that there were 57 deaths in a 28-day period following a positive test, a number higher than the 18 dead yesterday.
