Britain: New sex scandal shakes Boris Johnson’s government

A member of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government responsible for party discipline of Tory MPs has resigned after accusations of cheating on two men, causing fresh problems for the already scandal-weakened British leader.

In his resignation letter dated yesterday, Conservative caucus deputy leader Chris Pincher admits he had “drank too much” and apologizes for “embarrassing himself and others”.

According to British media, the 52-year-old Conservative MP assaulted two men, one of whom is an MP, at a private club in central London, the Carlton Club, on Wednesday night, prompting protests against him at the Conservative Party.

Although he has stepped down as deputy caucus leader, Chris Pincher remains an MP, prompting calls for his expulsion from the party and an internal investigation.

“There is no way the Conservatives are ignoring a potential sexual assault,” tweeted Angela Rayner, second-in-command of the main opposition Conservative Party.

“Boris Johnson must now say how Chris Pincher can remain a Tory MP,” she added, lamenting the “complete deterioration of public life” under Johnson’s premiership.

Chris Pincher, who was appointed in February, had already resigned as deputy leader of the caucus in 2017 when he was accused of making sexual advances to an Olympic athlete and potential Conservative election candidate.

This case is added to a series of other cases of a sexual nature that have put the ruling party in a difficult position in recent months.

A lawmaker suspected of rape, who was not named, was arrested and then released on bail in mid-May, another resigned in April for viewing pornography on his cellphone while in Parliament, and a former lawmaker was sentenced in May to 18 months in prison for sexual assault. at 15 years old.

Boris Johnson’s government has also been rocked by scandals such as Downing Street parties despite Covid-19 restrictions during the pandemic, which cost the prime minister a narrowly defeated censure motion.

Johnson has already paid dearly for these scandals at the polls, as the Conservatives were defeated in June in two by-elections.
