More than 100,000 individuals and organizations have expressed a desire to host Ukrainian refugees in the United Kingdom, the British government announced today, a day after the launch of the Ukraine’s reception program.
“It is fantastic that more than 100,000 people and organizations have expressed their willingness to support Ukrainians fleeing the war, thanks to the Homes for Ukraine program,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote on Twitter, thanking them for their help.
Those who decide to host Ukrainian refugees will receive 350 350 (€ 418) a month and will have to commit to being housed for at least six months. Beneficiary refugees, who must first obtain a visa, will be able to live and work in the United Kingdom for a period of three years and will be entitled to social benefits.
It is estimated that more than 3 million people have fled Ukraine because of the war.
Criticizing the delays but also the fact that it granted minimal visas to refugees (4,600, according to the latest figures), but also to the complicated process that these people had to go through, the Johnson government tried to change direction, simplifying things. A Johnson spokesman also said London was considering how to use the confiscated assets as part of sanctions imposed on Russian oligarchs and others in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine.
