British minister Penny Morton today launched her campaign to replace her Liz Truss in the prime ministership, thus becoming the first Conservative MP to officially announce her candidacy.
A former defense minister, Mordaud has been a staunch supporter of leaving the European Union and narrowly lost one of the two seats in the final showdown in the recent leadership contest.
Mordaud won plaudits for her performance in Parliament on Monday when she defended the government as it announced the withdrawal of most of the policies that had been announced.
One MP said Mordaud has “broad appeal”, referring to her ability to find friends in different wings of the party.
Mordant, 49, has kept her distance from his scandalous period Boris Johnson in charge.
“I will be running to be leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister – to unite our country, deliver on our promises and win the next General Election,” Mordaud tweeted.
“I have been encouraged by the support from colleagues who want a fresh start, a united party and leadership in the national interest.”
Bookies place Mordaud in third place, behind Rishi Sunak and Johnson, who are also expected to enter the race to succeed Truss.
Under Truss’s premiership, Mordaud was appointed Speaker of the House of Commons, and from that position she presided over the official announcement of Queen Elizabeth’s death and the proclamation of Charles as King.
