The British police announced today that they are launching an investigation against Kir Starmer for a possible violation of the rules for Covid-19 at a rally in 2021 in which the leader of the opposition Labor Party participated, in the light of “important new information”.
Starmer, who had previously served as the country’s attorney general, spearheaded calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Finance Minister Risi Sunak after they were both fined for a birthday party for Johnson’s staff. on Downing Street in June 2020.
An internal report found that Downing Street staff held a series of parties during the restrictions imposed by Covid, angering citizens and undermining confidence in the country’s political system.
The British prime minister may be fined more for other rallies under investigation by London police.
Starmer also faced increased scrutiny following images in April 2021 showing him drinking a bottle of beer with colleagues indoors during a visit to the North East of England.
The Durham Local Police Department had previously said it had ruled that no offense had been found, but said today that “after receiving important new information gathered in recent days” an investigation was launched.
A Labor Party spokesman said he was “obviously willing to answer any questions”.
“We remain clear that no rules have been violated,” the spokesman said.
