Britain: Pressure may mount on Putin’s gold reserves

Britain and its Western allies will increase economic pressure on Russia to see if more can be done to prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from gaining access to gold reserves, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said today.

Western sanctions have froze much of the Russian Central Bank’s $ 640 billion’s resources, excluded some banks from the global SWIFT payment system and dealt a blow to the ruble.

Ahead of today’s NATO summit in Brussels, Johnson told LBC Radio that Putin had already crossed a red line and would have to appear before the International Criminal Court.

“We need to do more,” he said. “And so we need to do more financially. For example can we do more to stop him from using his gold reserves in addition to his cash reserves?” He continued.

“The more pressure we put on now, especially on things like gold, the more I believe we can shorten the war,” he said.

Johnson also noted that US President Joe Biden has rightly stated that Russia is guilty of war crimes.

“It is right that Russia should now be brought before the International Court of Justice and it is right that President Putin should appear before the International Criminal Court,” he added.

“There is no doubt that what they are doing is war crimes,” he said.
