The news from the Sunday Times that the Prince of Wales, Charles, received a donation of 1 million pounds from the family of Osama Bin Laden broke like a bombshell.
The Sunday Times reports that the future king received the sum from Bakr Bin Laden, the “head” of the wealthy Saudi family, as well as his brother, Shafiq. As the newspaper reports, the two men are half-brothers of Osama Bin Laden, the man who founded Al-Qaeda.
They met in 2013
According to the report, Prince Charles, 73, is said to have had a private meeting with Bakr, 76, at Clarence House in London on October 30, 2013. Two years after Osama bin Laden was shot dead by US special forces near Islamabad in Pakistan.
For its part, the Palace strongly disputes many of the paper’s claims, and there is still no indication that Bakr or Shafiq bin Laden have supported or engaged in terrorist activities.
The chairman of the Prince of Wales’ Charitable Foundation (PWCF), Sir Ian Cheshire, said trustees had carefully scrutinized the donation. “The donation from Sheikh Bakr Bin Laden in 2013 was carefully considered by the foundation’s trustees at the time.”
“Due diligence was carried out, with information sought from a wide range of sources, including the government” and made it clear that “any attempt to suggest otherwise is misleading and inaccurate”.
According to Britain’s Guardian, a source close to Prince Charles said the matter was looked into and it was decided that there was no reason for Osama bin Laden’s actions to stigmatize the entire family.
Three million euros in suitcases from Qatar
It is recalled that about a month ago, a Sunday Times article revealed that Charles had received 3 million euros from the former prime minister of Qatar.
These were legitimate charitable donations paid “properly”, the prince’s office said after the publication. The money was paid in suitcases and bags, donated by Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al Thani, between 2011 and 2015.
