Problems with British airlines continue today, threatening the festive season of Easter. According to Bloomberg, officials warned of queues later in the week.
Both EasyJet and British Airways had more cancellations today, although airlines said the flights had been canceled in advance. According to FlightAware, British Airways canceled 7% of flights today and delayed 9%. More than 20% of EasyJet flights have been delayed, according to FlightAware, and an airline spokeswoman said 40 flights were canceled ahead of Sunday.
Heathrow Airport has deployed staff from Scotland and Northern Ireland to help reduce queues.
Travelers who have been waiting for years for their vacation abroad to return are now faced with last minute cancellations and long queues at airports.
Airlines that laid off staff during the coronavirus pandemic are trying to add enough staff as well as address the coronavirus-related absences.
Both Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport said they expected a significant number of travelers during Easter. Heathrow said it was developing additional staff in anticipation of the number of passengers it had seen since early March 2020.
A Gatwick spokesman said queues could form during peak times, such as weekends and Easter holidays. He advised passengers to arrive as early as possible for their airline to check in, usually three hours for long distances and two and a half for short distances.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority sent a letter to airlines earlier this week asking them to work with airports to manage staff shortages and ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.
