Britain: Raises alert level for coronavirus due to Omicron Mutation

THE Britain raised the coronavirus alert level on Sunday in response to its rapid spread Omicron mutation, as the country’s medical authorities warned that hospitalizations are likely to increase sharply in the coming weeks, Reuters reported.

Top health officials in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have recommended raising the alert level 4 from level 3 to a five-point scale, meaning they consider the virus to be highly contagious.

“Early indications are that the Omicron mutation is spreading much faster than the Delta and that protection against the vaccine against Omicron’s symptomatic disease is declining,” officials said in a joint statement.

“The data on the severity of the disease with Omicron will be clarified in the coming weeks, but there are already hospitalizations from Omicron and these are likely to increase rapidly.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to address the issue of vaccination booths in a message to British citizens.

“The booster dose with both vaccines – Pfizer and Moderna – significantly increases the immune response and shows good efficacy, although with some reduction compared to Delta,” health officials said.

Level 5 – the maximum alert level – would mean that health services are at risk of being overloaded.
