Retail sales in the UK fell 0.5% month-on-month in May and the April increase was revised downwards, according to the ONS statistics service, in a new indication of how rising inflation is hurting the economy.
Economists expected a 0.7% decline on a monthly basis in May.
The statistical service pointed out that the volumes of retail sales in April increased by 0.4% compared to March, to a much smaller increase than the initially announced 1.4%.
Retail sales fell in May due to falling food sales, said ONS Deputy Director for Research and Financial Indicators.
He added that the information available from the supermarkets, shows that customers spend less in the store for groceries, due to the increased cost of living.
