British hospitals, especially those in London, are struggling to maintain their staffing capacity due to the number of those who need to be isolated due to coronavirus exposure, a doctor at the emergency services said today.
With the new highly contagious Omicron variant of the coronavirus spreading, Britain yesterday recorded the highest number of daily cases since the beginning of the pandemic with 78,610 new infections.
“The serious problem is essentially staffing,” Kathryn Henderson, president of the Royal College of Surgeons, told the BBC.
“Even if there is not a large increase in hospitalizations, we are already seeing the impact of not having enough staff to do the shifts properly and safely. So we are worried about the harm that patients may suffer because we do not have staff.”
Henderson notes that London is particularly hard hit.
“We are talking about a possible 10% of staff, ie doctors and nurses, who need to be decommissioned,” she said.
