Britain: Seven in ten doctors suffer from ’empathy fatigue’

Seven out of ten UK GPs suffer from so-called empathy fatigue, a gradual loss of empathy towards their patients, according to a poll published in The Guardian newspaper today. This poll was carried out by the Medical and Dental Defense Union of Scotland (MDDUS), an organization which provides support to health professionals, among a sample of 1,855 doctors across the UK. As it turns out, 71% of GPs and 62% of doctors overall have experienced empathy fatigue, which undermines the doctor-patient relationship. The results concern the youngest members of the medical profession, aged 25 to 34, who appear to be most affected by the phenomenon.
