Britain: Sunak first in the third qualifying round for the leadership of the Tories

Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordant remained on track to claim the Conservative leadership and become the next UK prime minister after winning the third ballot on Monday, according to Bloomberg.

The former finance minister won 115 votes while Mordaud received 82 votes. Secretary of State Liz Truss was third with 71 votes. Kemi Beidenock secured fourth place and stayed in the race, while Tom Tugenhut was eliminated.

With further votes scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, the picture may yet change and much will depend on who Tugenhat’s supporters choose to support. The field will be narrowed down to two finalists, with members of the Tory base making the final decision. The winner will be announced on September 5th.

Sunak’s position is now strong, approaching the 120 votes he needs to secure a place in the final duo, while at least some of Tugenhat’s votes are also likely to move in his direction.
