Tesco, Britain’s largest retailer, was the only one of the four major supermarket companies to see its sales increase in the last 12 weeks, increasing its dominance in the industry ahead of Christmas, according to research firm NielsenIQ .
The company’s survey showed that sales increased 0.4% year-on-year in the 12 weeks to November 6, increasing its stake by 0.2% to 26.6%.
In contrast, the smaller competitors Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons, saw their sales fall 3.1%, 2.4% and 4.7% respectively, and all lost market share.
Last month, tesco announced a 16.6% increase in first-half earnings, and upgraded earnings estimates despite problems in the supply chain.
NielsenIQ reported that total supermarket sales in the UK in the four weeks to November 6 fell 2% from high comparative figures ahead of a second national lockdown last year.
However, sales increased by 4.9% in the corresponding period of 2019.
The research company announced that the visits to the stores increased by 6.5% compared to the previous year, a percentage that corresponds to 28 million more visits.
In contrast, the share of online sales fell 12.2%, down from 12.6% in the previous four weeks.
