Britain: The gap between Tras and Sunak is narrowing ahead of the election of a new leader of the Conservatives

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, the favorite to replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has a narrower lead over rival Rishi Sunak than previously estimated, according to a poll of party members.

Tras has the support of 48% of Conservative Unionist Party members compared to 43% who support former finance minister Sunak, according to a poll of 807 people by Techne from July 19 to 27.

This suggests a more nuanced and tougher battle than a previous poll of Conservative party members conducted by YouGov on July 20-21, in which Truss had a 24-point lead over Sunak.

Sunak and Truss are touring Britain trying to secure the votes of around 200,000 members of the centre-right Conservative Unionist Party, who will choose their next leader and prime minister, with the winner to be announced on September 5.

Taxes have so far dominated the battle. Sunak has accused Truss of being “disingenuous” to voters with promises of big tax cuts once in office. Sunak said he would first ensure inflation is under control before cutting taxes, which Tras said would push the country into recession.

More than 60% of Tory members in the Techne poll said Truss had better ideas on tax than Mr Sunack, while they also backed her plans to tackle inflation and immigration. However, respondents said they have more confidence that Sunak will get Brexit done and has better policy proposals on education.
