Britain’s new education secretary, James Cleverley, said today he does not agree with calls for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to resign immediately in order to have a functioning government, saying the Conservative Party should conduct a comprehensive process to find the best leader.
“Johnson remains prime minister until a new prime minister is found, that’s how our system works,” Cleverley told Sky News.
“I think everyone recognizes the reason to do this properly and professionally, but quickly, so that there is some validity,” he said.
Johnson resigned on Thursday, saying he would remain prime minister until a successor is found, a process that could take several months.
Cleverley has made it clear he will not be running for the party leadership.
Cleverley, who took charge of the education ministry yesterday, rejected former prime minister John Major’s call to speed up the appointment of a new leader by skipping a final vote by Conservative Party members across the country.
“John Major has his point, I disagree with it. I think it’s extremely important to test a candidate’s ability to reach outside the Westminster bubble, so I think that’s an important part of the process,” he said.
What we’re not going to do is make sweeping changes that would tie the hands of Johnson’s successor, Cleverly concluded.
