By September 5, the Conservative party will have decided on Boris Johnson’s replacement. This was decided by the “Committee 1922”, the competent body of the party responsible for determining the terms, details and timetable of the internal party election process.
Each candidate must today, by 8 pm Greek time, have the declaration of support of at least 20 MPs of the party in order to have the right to submit a candidacy.
The electoral process is divided into two phases. In the first, the deputies of the party with successive secret votes will end up with the two most dominant. This stage should be completed by July 21 at the latest, when the British Parliament closes for the summer recess.
In the second phase, the approximately 200,000 members of the Conservative party will be invited by mail to vote for the election of their new leader who will also be the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Tomorrow Wednesday at 3:30 Greek time, the first round of consecutive secret ballots within the Conservative parliamentary group will begin. By 5:30 it will have been completed and at 7 the names of the candidates who will move on to the next phase will have been announced. Any candidate who gets less than 30 votes will be disqualified. On Thursday the process will be repeated between 1 pm and 3:30 Greek time. The candidate with the fewest votes will drop out of the succession race. The same will be repeated as many times as necessary until the two final candidates prevail.
At the moment, the top five are former Finance Minister Ricky Shunak, supported by Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab and Transport Minister Grand Sapps, who will not be a candidate as he initially stated.
Also, Foreign Minister Liz Truss, who seems to be supported by the right wing of the Conservative parliamentary group and behind the scenes it is heard that she also has the support of Boris Johnson, but also Attorney General Suella Braverman, who seems to be supported by the right wing of Tory and is relatively high in the opinion polls.
On the other hand, according to a poll by the Conservative House website, members of the Conservative party seem to be supporting former Minister of Defense and current Under Secretary for Trade Policy Penny Mordant, and Under Secretary for Local Government, Faith and Communities Kemi Bedenock. These are two candidates who are not part of Boris Johnson’s cabinet, which shows that the Conservative base “wants a fresh start”, as analysts note.
The main opposition filed a motion of censure against the government
Meanwhile, the main Labor opposition has said it will table a motion of no confidence against the government, which will be debated in the British parliament tomorrow. It is also supported by the other opposition parties, the Liberal Democrats and the SNP, but it will also need the vote of Conservative Party MPs to pass and thus bring down the government and call early elections.
Although there are several Tory MPs who have called for the immediate removal of Boris Johnson from power, analysts estimate that it will be very difficult to vote in favor of this proposal pointing out that “it is one thing to question your leader within the party and another to overthrow your government”.
