Britain will offer work visas to graduates of the world’s top universities in an expansion of the post-Brexit immigration system designed to attract “the best and smartest” workers.
After leaving the European Union, Britain put an end to the priority given to EU citizens and introduced a point-based immigration system that ranks applicants for everything from their qualifications and language skills to the type of work offered to them. .
But the country has been facing a tight labor market for years – to which Brexit and COVID-19 were added – and companies in the industrial, logistics and food sectors have called on the government to relax the rules for lower-level recruitment.
Under the plan announced today, bachelor’s or master’s degree holders from the top 50 universities abroad can apply for a two-year work visa and will be allowed to bring their family members with them. Holders of doctoral degrees can apply for a three-year visa.
Successful applicants will then be able to obtain longer-term employment visas, the government said.
Finance Minister Risi Sunak said he would allow Britain to become an international hub for innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.
“We want tomorrow’s businesses to be built here today – that’s why I urge students to seize this incredible opportunity to forge their careers here,” Sunak said.
Under the new program, applicants must have received their diplomas no more than five years before the application date.
Eligible universities must be included in the top 50 based on the ranking of two of the following: the Times Higher Education world ranking, the Academic Ranking of World Universities and the Quacquarelli Symonds world ranking.
The most recent list of eligible universities from 2021, published online by the UK government, includes at least 24 US universities, as well as universities in Canada, Japan, Germany, China, Singapore, France and Sweden. .
The government said candidates should pass a security and crime check, and be able to speak, read, listen and write in English at an intermediate level.
