Britain: Ukraine repulses numerous Russian attacks along Donbass contact line

LAST UPDATE: 17:12

Ukraine repulsed numerous Russian attacks along the line of contact in Donbas this week, a British military source said today, according to Reuters.

“Despite the fact that Russia has made some territorial gains, the Ukrainian resistance has been strong on all fronts and has caused significant costs to Russian forces,” the Pentagon said in a regular tweet.

“Bad Russian morale and limited time to rebuild, rearm and reorganize forces from previous attacks are likely to hamper Russian effectiveness in combat,” the statement added.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the report.

Russians attack Azovstal – Bombing military targets

Russian forces are trying to invade the Azovstal plant in Mariupol from the ground, backed by both air and ground bombardments, Ukrainian President’s adviser Oleksiy Arestovich said today.

Arestovich wrote in a Facebook post that “Russian troops are trying to make up for Azofstal’s defenders and more than 1,000 civilians who have taken refuge in the factory.”

The Azofstal steel plant is the main remaining Ukrainian fort in the southeastern port of Mariupol. Russian troops surrounded the plant in early March and have gradually taken control of most of the city.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said today that its high-precision missiles hit nine Ukrainian military targets overnight, according to Reuters.

Among them are four weapons depots in the Kharkiv region, where artillery weapons were stored.

Ukraine blames Russia for failing to evacuate residents in Mariupol

No humanitarian corridors were opened in Mariupol today, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Verestsuk said, accusing Russian forces of not keeping the ceasefire to evacuate civilians.

Verestsuk said the Ukrainian side would try again on Monday to establish a safe passage from Mariupol and called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is due to travel to Moscow before visiting Kyiv next week, to demand fire and open humanitarian corridors from Mariupol.

“This is what Guterres will have to discuss in Moscow if he is going to talk about peace,” Verestsuk said.
