Britain today announced it would begin vaccinating coronavirus children aged 5-11 in vulnerable groups following a decision by the country’s drug regulator to approve a lower dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for this age group. club.

Children will receive two doses of 10 micrograms of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, equivalent to one-third of the adult dose, which will be given eight weeks apart between the first and second doses, the JCVI has announced. ).

The commission said a decision on whether younger children should be vaccinated in general would be made after additional data were considered on the rapidly spreading Omicron variant and the effect of immunization on young children.

“The majority of children between the ages of 5 and 11 are at very low risk of becoming seriously ill because of COVID-19,” said Wei Saint-Lim, JCVI’s president for COVID-19 immunization.

“However, some children aged 5 to 11 have underlying diseases that put them at higher risk and we advise these children to be vaccinated in the first phase,” he said.

The Commission also recommended that booster doses be given to children aged 16 and 17 years and to children aged 12 to 15 years belonging to a clinical risk group in response to the Omicron variant.
