Britain wants to send modern equipment to Moldova to protect it from the threat of Russian invasion, writes The Telegraph, citing Foreign Minister Liz Tras.
The foreign minister told the newspaper that Russian President Vladimir Putin was determined to create a “bigger Russia” despite the fact that his invasion of Ukraine had failed miserably.
Russia calls the February 24 invasion a “special military operation” aimed at disarming Ukraine and ousting radical anti-Russian nationalists. Ukraine and its allies reject this claim and say it was an unfounded pretext for war.
Moldova, which borders Ukraine, is not a member of the NATO alliance.
Trash said talks were under way to ensure Moldova’s defense systems could prevent any future attack.
“I would like to see Moldova equipped with NATO standards. It is a discussion we have with our allies,” he told the Telegraph.
“Putin was very clear about his ambitions to create a bigger Russia. And the fact that his attempts to occupy Kyiv were not successful does not mean that he has given up those ambitions,” he said.
If Tra’s plans are approved, NATO members will provide state-of-the-art equipment to Moldova, replacing Soviet-era equipment, and training soldiers on how to use it.
