Britain warns Russia of ‘strategic mistake’ if it invades Ukraine

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on Thursday reiterated her warning to Russia that any invasion of Ukraine would be a costly mistake, but welcomed Moscow’s willingness to start talks.

“Any Russian invasion would be a huge strategic mistake and will be dealt with vigorously, including coordinated sanctions with our allies to impose serious costs on Russia’s interests and economy,” she said in a statement.

“The only way out of the current situation for Russia is dialogue, and I welcome the fact that Russia has stated that it is ready to start talks in January.”

The Kremlin denies planning an invasion and says the West is occupied by Russophobia. Moscow says NATO’s eastward expansion threatens Russia and has violated assurances given to it when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

Communication of the leaders of the Russian and British armed forces

Meanwhile, the head of the Russian armed forces, Valery Gerasimov, in a telephone conversation with his British counterpart, Tony Radakin, discussed regional and global security, the Russian news agency TASS quoted the Russian news agency TASS as saying.

“The two military leaders discussed regional security issues, bilateral military relations and agreed that it was important to continue contacts to better understand each other and to avoid mistakes,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also said today that Russia wants to avoid a confrontation with Ukraine and the West, but needs an “immediate” response from the United States and its allies to its demands for security guarantees.
