The defense ministers of Turkey, Britain and Italy will meet in Istanbul today to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the security ties between the three NATO allies, the Turkish Defense Ministry said.
British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini will visit Istanbul at the invitation of their Turkish counterpart, Hulusi Akar.
“At the meeting, where there will be an exchange of views on relations between the countries in the field of defense and security and on regional issues, developments in Ukraine are also expected to be discussed,” the statement said.
Turkey shares maritime borders with Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea, has good relations with both and has taken on the role of mediator in the conflict. It has hosted peace talks between the Ukrainian and Russian foreign ministers and negotiating teams of the two countries and is working to arrange a meeting of their presidents.
Turkey and Italy have also stepped up their commitment following a NATO summit last month, where the leaders of Turkey, Italy and France discussed ways to revive the SAMP-T anti-aircraft system by the French-Italian consortium Eurosam.
Yesterday, Thursday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu said that he discussed the TF-X fighter jet program with his British counterpart Liz Tras, at a NATO summit in Brussels. The program has stalled due to engine issues with Rolls Royce.
