British parliamentarians detained by Israel return home

Two members of the British Parliament who had their entry to Deny Israel returned to London after trying to visit the West Bank on a investigation trip.

Abtisam Mohamed and Yuan Yang of the Labor Party, which rules the United Kingdom, were traveling as part of a parliamentary delegation, but were prevented from entering the border on the grounds that they intended to provoke anti-Israel activities, according to the Israeli embassy in the United Kingdom.

Blocking the visit of parliamentarians marks the last of a series of Israel’s attempts to restrict the entry of foreign parliamentarians and dignitaries who criticized the country’s violence against their neighbors.

“We are surprised by the unprecedented measure taken by the Israeli authorities to refuse the entry of British parliamentarians on our trip to visit the busy West Bank,” Mohamed and Yang said in a joint statement.

“It is vital that parliamentarians can witness, firsthand, the situation in the busy Palestinian territory.”

The Israeli embassy in London said the Interior Ministry had a duty to prevent people who wanted to cause damage to the state.

“These individuals accused Israel with false allegations, were actively involved in promoting sanctions against Israeli ministers and supported campaigns designed to boycott the state of Israel,” the embassy said.

In a statement on Sunday, Mohamed and Yang said they had spoken out in the British Parliament on the conflict between Israel and Palestine and the importance of complying with international law.

“Parliamentarians should feel free to tell the truth in the House of Common, without fear of being targets,” they said.

In November, Mohamed asked the UK government if he would review his relationship with Israel in the light of the “atrocities that are taking place in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon.”

Yang told Parliament that it was important for the United Kingdom to proceed with sanctions against Israeli government officials.

United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the detention of parliamentarians Mohamed and Yang was not a way to treat parliamentarians.

Israel has previously prevented the entry of representatives of the European Parliament and the US Congress in the country.

In October, Israel’s Foreign Minister said he was preventing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres from entering the country because he had not “unequivocally condemned” an attack with Iran’s missiles against Israel.
