British radio producer James O’Brien, in a podcast on LBC Radio, comments ironically on Rishi Sounak’s reaction when he learned what Kyriakos Mitsotakis said about the Parthenon Sculptures, but also what followed with the cancellation of the meeting between the two prime ministers. He notes that the British Prime Minister’s behavior is reminiscent of an “8-year-old child” who packs up his things and goes home because his football teammates don’t care for him.
Specifically, O’Brien says: “Shunak is sitting in a room in Downing Street admiring his ankles – which is apparently the only reason he wears his trousers so tight – and someone says to him: ‘Ooh, you can never imagine what Mitsotakis did” and someone else adds: “I guess he mentioned that the Greek government is quite keen to see the Parthenon Sculptures return to Athens because firstly they are building a museum specifically for it, secondly George Osborne is making quite a fuss , encouraging such a development lastly and thirdly it is theoretically a position of the Greek government long before Rishi Sunak was even born”. So this is the climate in Downing Street, “look what Mitsotakis did” and Rishi Sunak, a theoretically mature man, replies… “fine then, we’re canceling the meeting”».
‘At the very top of British government, a grown man acted like an eight-year-old boy taking his football home when we refused to let him be centre-forward.’@mrjamesob breaks down Rishi Sunak’s ‘petulant, crass’ cancellation of a meeting with the Greek PM over the Elgin Marbles. pic.twitter.com/EKQ1m1O7Vw

“Then someone from his team, says to him ‘Mr Prime Minister, you can show your annoyance, but canceling the meeting will make us look a bit… what word could we use to combine flattery with diplomacy… hypersensitive, too vulnerable to criticism… I don’t think we should cancel the meeting and then Sunak replies: “Too late, hahaha”, typing on his phone (to the Greek Prime Minister) “Mitsotakis, the meeting is cancelled, accept it, whether you like it, or not, Rishi.’ And so, the whole press is talking about an angry and nervous response to a perfect, precise and well-articulated position, expressed by a foreign prime minister.
Really, why did he do it? A grown man at the top of the government acted in a way that reminds me of nothing more than an 8 year old boy packing up his soccer stuff and going homewhen the rest refuse to let it play offensively for the 17th straight game…” continues the radio producer.
