Bronchiolitis is the leading cause of death in children up to 1 year old, infectologist warns

The main infectious cause of death in children up to 1 year old in the world is bronchiolitis.

The alert was made by the coordinator of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Committee of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases Marcelo Otsuka.

A CNN Radio in the Medical Correspondent, the infectologist highlighted that the disease “is serious and even the conditions that do not evolve, which do not require hospitalization, give work because of the discomfort.”

This week, Pfizer requested registration of the Abrysvo vaccine against bronchiolitis with Anvisa.

The immunizer, as explained by Otsuka, is applied to pregnant women between 24 and 36 weeks, “it is safe and does not cause problems for newborns.”

On the contrary, the vaccine guarantees protection in the first six months of life.

Bronchiolitis, according to Otsuka, is the “infection caused by several viruses”, it starts with a flu-like condition and in the following days it gets worse.

“Sometimes there is a need for mechanical ventilation,” he added.

Pfizer’s compound will undergo analysis by Anvisa to then be priced and finally become available to the population.
