Bruno Le Maire on Johnson’s resignation: Populism and Brexit are not a good combination

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation shows that populism and Brexit were not a good combination, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said today, adding that he will not miss Johnson.

After a series of scandals, Johnson announced on Thursday that he would step down as prime minister after a barrage of ministers, under-secretaries and advisers quit, but said he would remain in office until a successor is chosen.

Asked for his reaction to Johnson’s decision, Le Maire told France Info radio: “It proves, in any case, that Brexit combined with populism does not make a good cocktail for a nation.”

“Personally, I will not miss him,” added the French minister.

“What Boris Johnson is going to leave behind I don’t think is going to be particularly brilliant,” Le Maire added.
