Brussels calls on Ukraine to speed up anti-corruption reforms

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen today called on Ukraine to speed up its anti-corruption reforms, assuring that the country has the support of the Twenty-Seven “on the long road” to joining the European Union.

Von der Leyen praised the reforms that have already been made and the institutions that have been put in place to create “an impressive anti-corruption mechanism,” in a video speech to Ukrainian lawmakers.

“But these institutions now need means of action and the right people in positions of responsibility”, he added.

“The new head of the special anti-corruption prosecutor’s office and the new director of the Ukrainian National Office for the fight against corruption must be appointed as soon as possible,” said the head of the Commission.

Referring to the plan for the reform of the Constitutional Court, von der Leyen considered it “necessary to provide, through legislation, a procedure for the selection of judges”.

She welcomed Ukraine’s adoption of a law aimed at stopping “the excessive influence of oligarchs on the economy”, but asked that the country now ensure “its implementation in a legally sound manner”.

Von der Leyen also called for the adoption of “a law on the media, making Ukrainian legislation compatible with European Union standards and equipping the independent media regulatory authority with the necessary means.”

The leaders of the Twenty-Seven agreed on June 23 in Ukraine the status of a candidate country for EU membership.

“The road ahead will be long, but Europe will be by your side every step of the way, for as long as it takes, from these dark days of war until you cross the threshold of our European Union,” promised Ursula von der Leyen.
