Brussels is releasing 325 million euros for refugees in Turkey

The European Union (EU) today announced the release of 325m euros from Ankara for the extension of a refugee assistance program in Turkey, out of a total of 3 billion euros announced in June.

An “emergency program” funded by the EU for five years now allows more than 1.5 million refugees living in Turkey to benefit from a monthly assistance for their basic needs.

The amount of assistance is 155 Turkish pounds (10 euros) per month per person, which is supplemented, depending on the size of the beneficiary family, with a quarterly bonus.

“This assistance is valuable to hundreds of thousands of families, many of whom have been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic,” said in a statement European Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarcic, who is currently visiting Ankara.

The release of these funds allows the aid program to be extended until 2023. This amount is part of the total of € 3 billion for refugees in Turkey announced at the end of the European Council last June.

By 2021, € 535 million had already been released to continue EU action in Turkey.

The assistance program is implemented in cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Turkish Red Crescent.

Turkey hosts more than four million refugees, mostly Syrians.
