BTS and Joe Biden to meet to discuss hate crimes against Asians

The White House announced on Thursday (26) that US President Joe Biden will host South Korean group BTS in Washington to discuss hate crimes against Asians.

During the meeting with Biden, the K-pop phenoms, also known as the “Bangtan Boys”, are also expected to address the increasing discrimination against Asians in recent years, since the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The US government also aims to address the inclusion and representativeness of the Asian community in the country.

This meeting is part of “Americans of Asian Descent (AA) or Pacific Island Peoples (NHPI) Heritage Month”, traditionally celebrated in May in the US.

“President Biden had previously spoken out about his commitment to fighting the wave of hate crimes against Asians, and he signed into law the Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act in May 2021 to provide security forces with resources to identify, investigate, and reporting hate crimes, and ensuring that information about hate crimes is more accessible to the AA and NHPI communities,” the White House wrote in the meeting’s announcement.

“President Biden and BTS will also discuss the importance of diversity and inclusion and BTS’ platform as youth ambassadors who spread a message of hope and positivity around the world,” the White House concluded.

World’s best selling artist

For the second year in a row, South Korean K-pop group BTS has been chosen to receive the Global Recording Artist of the Year, awarded by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which elects the ten best-selling artists worldwide.

This was the first time in the award’s history that the same artist/group won two years in a row – they were also the first Koreans to top the list in 2020.

The award shows the worldwide performance of an artist or group, whether in digital or physical media format – such as performance on streaming platforms or record sales, including concert success, number of albums released, repercussion and promotion.

In 2021, BTS released “Butter” in May, ranking number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks. In July, the group’s new single, “Permission to Dance”, also debuted at number one on the Hot 100. In September, Coldplay and BTS released the single “My Universe”, which also reached number one in the US. The group also stood out in Asia.
