The members of BTS , the K-pop supergroup, are planning to serve in the military, the band’s record company confirmed on Monday. Jin, the oldest member, is expected to start the process at the end of the month.
Military service is mandatory in South Korea, where nearly all able-bodied men are required to serve in the army for 18 months at age 28.
South Korea’s parliament passed a bill in 2020 allowing pop stars — that is, those who “stand out in popular culture and art” — to defer their service until age 30.
With Jin turning 30 this year, and the band’s announcement of a June break from the group’s music activities to pursue solo projects, the members are now making plans to serve.
BTS is expected to reunite as a group around 2025, according to BIGHIT Music.
The label said it is analyzing the band’s military service moment, “to respect the needs of the country and for these healthy young people”, and said the time is “now”.
“Group member Jin will start the process once his schedule for his solo release is completed in late October. He will follow the Korean government’s enlistment procedure,” the label said, adding, “Other members of the group plan to carry out their military service based on their own individual plans.”
The country’s defense minister said in August that BTS can still perform abroad while serving in the military, Reuters news agency reported.
