In the 1st year of high school, the students of Colégio Darcília Coimbra, in the municipality of João Pinheiro (MG), were euphoric when they received a letter coming directly from Buckingham Palace, England, signed in the name of Queen Elizabeth II. The correspondence was a response to the letter sent by the students as a way of congratulating her on her 70 years of reign (Platinum Jubilee) and wishing the monarch to recover from Covid-19 – at the time, she was contaminated.
The process, which seemed like a distant dream to the students, was quick. The students wrote the letter and Professor Márlon Marques Melgaço, who coordinated the sending and took care of the translation and delivery, in March. On May 23, the answer was already with the students of the college.
Márlon, who teaches Philosophy at the school, was teaching students about political regimes and forms of government when he suggested the production of the letter. He comments that the idea came about because of their interest in the British monarchy.
Student Ana Clara Silva, who was part of the production of the letter, says that, at first, the students found the teacher’s idea very creative, but they did not imagine that it would reach the queen. Márlon had explained that if it wasn’t written correctly, it wouldn’t even be read by the palace. However, the students’ excitement and the teacher’s encouragement were enough stimuli for everyone to come across and sign the correspondence.

The correspondence came named to the students, addressed to the college and, translated, contains the following words:
“To: students at Darcília Coimbra College
The Queen wants me to write and thank you for the letter you sent to Her Majesty on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee.
The queen was happy to hear this from you, and while unable to answer you personally, her majesty greatly appreciated the pleasant things you said.
I must again thank you for your message of good wishes to the Queen in this year of her Platinum Jubilee.

The College’s reactions
The philosophy professor comments that, after receiving the letter from the Palace, the students increased their admiration for the queen, who, in his opinion, is a symbol of democracy, freedom, respect for the laws, free press and stability (of respectability of institutions). “Everything Brazil needs”, in her words.
“Teachers must encourage students’ dreams and always show them how to make them come true. The joy of the boys infected me, made me excited. And everyone realized that they can be part of the real dream, that everything can be real”, declares Márlon.
Julia Brasil Couto, a student who quickly embraced the idea, shared with CNN what were the feelings upon receiving the letter. On behalf of the 1st year high school students at Colégio Darcília Correia, she says: “we were very happy and very happy with the letter we received directly from the castle in England. That’s because we greatly admire the queen’s craft and her leadership, which was one of the best known throughout history. And on top of that, there’s also the fact that she represents the modernity of the British empire.”
Maria Clara Xavier, also from the 1st year, ends the matter with a positive statement: “I felt, with this gesture, that anything is possible. Just believe, as our teacher did. If we do something good, someone will look out for us, no matter how small we are. The school encourages us to do that, to be good people.”
