Residents of Budapest’s sixth district have narrowly voted to ban short-term rentals from 2026, a decision that could have wider implications for the housing market in one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. Eurostat figures show that last year almost 719 million overnight stays in the EU came from online bookings through the Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Tripadvisor platforms with Paris leading the EU capitals with more than 19 million overnight stays. Within central Europe, Budapest was the most popular for short stays with 6.7 million bookings, ahead of Vienna, Prague, Warsaw, Krakow and other cities.
