Authorities in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires have begun implementing a blockchain-based project to verify documents. The system uses the digital identification protocol QuarkID, created by Web3 Extrimian.

From October, Buenos Aires residents will be able to access their ID cards through a digital wallet. As well as birth and marriage certificates, income confirmation certificates and education documents. In the future, the system will provide health data and payment management capabilities, and promises a roadmap for rolling out the system throughout Argentina by the end of 2023.

QuarkID wallets are powered by zkSync Era, an Ethereum network scaling protocol that uses zero-knowledge rollups. This technology allows the parties to a transaction to prove the accuracy of a statement without disclosing any specific information about it. All documents will be stored on the blockchain, which will ensure a high degree of security. Citizens will be able to independently manage their data when communicating with officials, businesses or other citizens.

“Thanks to this project, Buenos Aires has become the first city in Latin America and one of the first in the world to integrate the latest technology for the digital identification of people. This will become the standard by which other countries will also use blockchain for the benefit of people,” said Buenos Aires Innovation Minister Diego Fernandez.

The Argentine authorities have long recognized the potential of blockchain and are striving to use it. In 2021, the Port of Buenos Aires used blockchain to speed up the process of cargo transportation and customs clearance. Last year, Argentine lawmaker Dario Nieto proposed using blockchain to pay social benefits.
