Bulgaria: Bulgartransgaz chief talks about future of gas and hydrogen

The era of gas and the future of hydrogen is not over, Bulgartransgaz CEO Vladimir Malinov said today at the 3rd Sofia Economic Forum, organized by the Delphi Economic Forum and the Center for Liberal Strategies. According to the Bulgarian news agency BTA, speaking about the diversification of natural gas sources, the CEO of Bulgartransgaz said that the first step for Bulgaria was taken with the decision for the state-owned Bulgartransgaz to become a shareholder in the liquefied natural gas terminal. The goal is to achieve at least 5% connectivity by January 1, 2025, but the parties are more ambitious to achieve connectivity of up to 10-15%, Malinov said. In addition, there are plans for completely new networks, including a hydrogen pipeline for the Maritsa (Evros) river basin in the south, as well as a joint project to connect Sofia and Thessaloniki with a hydrogen pipeline, BTA reports.

Bulgaria can achieve its climate neutrality targets by 2050, said Olivier Market, president of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Bulgaria.

Strategic infrastructure projects are key to the development of Bulgaria and the region, said Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Javor Penchev. Good transport connectivity between countries is the basis for economic growth and strong ties between economies and tourism, he added.
