The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry officially confirmed today that by a note dated June 1, 2022, it did not grant diplomatic permission to a Russian aircraft carrying Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to fly into Bulgarian airspace, as reported by the Bulgarian news agency. The decision is in line with the sanctions regime imposed by the European Union against Russia, it is noted.
In addition, as of February 25, 2022, Sergei Lavrov is included in the list of natural and legal persons subject to restrictive measures by the EU, reminded the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The same telegram states that Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to pay a two-day visit to Serbia today and tomorrow, but was unable to travel as Bulgaria, northern Macedonia and Montenegro did not allow him to fly over the plane.
“The unthinkable has happened,” he said, referring to the closure of the three Balkan states’ airspace.
