Bulgaria: Discusses investment opportunities with US companies

Bulgarian Minister of Innovation and Development Daniel Lorer discussed the deepening of trade and investment relations during a meeting with US companies in Washington, his ministry announced in a press release today. Lorer presented the opportunities for investment in high-tech production and research and development activities in Bulgaria, noting the growing interest of American companies.

During his official visit to the United States, Secretary Laurent participated in a roundtable discussion with representatives of US companies in Washington, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce. He also attended a meeting with representatives of the US Department of Commerce, representatives of companies specializing in machinery, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, transportation automation, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, among others.

Topics discussed included the development of the autonomous car department and related research and development activities, as well as opportunities for co-operation with technology institutes and science in Bulgaria, including the Institute of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) in Sophia. In the field of machinery construction, the participants in the meeting discussed a technology for nitrogen storage and charging stations for electric vehicles.

Lorer presented the research opportunities offered by Bulgaria in the field of molecular biology. The possibility of aerospace research was also discussed, as well as the possibility of Bulgaria becoming a transit point in Central and Eastern Europe for cargo originating from Asia and destined for the Old Continent.

All participants in the discussion expressed interest in further developing specific programs and initiatives. In the short term, a scientific delegation to Bulgaria will be organized by the Virginia Commonwealth University Technology Transfer and Patent Commercialization Center, as well as state-level trade missions in cooperation with the State Agency for International Development (SIDO) and the US Department of Commerce.

During his visit to Washington, Secretary Lorer discussed with the State Department Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs the forthcoming signing of a bilateral economic cooperation memorandum. The agreement will help Bulgaria and the US further strengthen their ties by increasing trade participation and imports of goods, services and investments into Bulgaria from the US private sector.
