Bulgaria: Government approves euro adoption plan

The Bulgarian government today approved a plan to adopt the euro in the country, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Assen Vassilev said at a news conference. The minister reminded that Bulgaria has planned to join the eurozone on January 1, 2024.

“This is a business plan that sets clear deadlines and tasks for banks, payments and government institutions on how to manage this currency introduction and how to convert Bulgarian lev (BGN) deposits and loans into euros. (EUR) “, explained Vasilev.

“It is a technical first step. A number of legislative amendments still need to be made, including the revision of the law on the National Bank of Bulgaria,” the deputy prime minister said. He clarified that further public discussions and consultations of experts will take place for the country’s accession to the eurozone.
