The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry announced tonight that it had described a Russian diplomat as an “undesirable person” and had given him 72 hours to leave the country, accusing him of espionage.
The ministry said it had been informed by the country’s prosecutors that the first secretary of the Russian embassy was involved in an espionage case. Two weeks ago, Bulgaria had already deported ten Russian diplomats.
Earlier, the prosecutor’s office said there were “suspicions” against “two national security officials” (counterintelligence) and a ministry agent who allegedly “provided information” in Moscow.
Dozens of Russian diplomats have been deported from the United States, the Netherlands, Ireland, Poland and other countries since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. Recently, Sofia recalled its ambassador to Moscow for consultations, in protest of statements made by the Russian ambassador to Bulgaria about the war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Kirill Petkov said he expected Moscow to do the same, but that has not happened to date.
