Bulgaria: ‘No nuclear weapons in the country’, says President Radev

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has dismissed as “speculative” reports that US Air Force fighters who arrived in the country for an aerial policing mission were carrying nuclear weapons.

“These fighters are coming here primarily to conduct joint training exercises with the Bulgarian Air Force and to support enhanced aerial policing. There is not even a question of nuclear weapons,” he said.

On May 30, the Allied Air Force Bureau of Public Affairs announced that US Air Force F-35 aircraft deployed at Spangdalem Air Base in Germany had landed at Graf Ignatievo Air Base near Plovdiv, Plovniv, Plovdiv. for a large-scale mission to the country in support of NATO’s vigilance activities on the east side.

“Conducting routine operations and exercising freedom of navigation and overflight is key to NATO’s ability to strengthen our collective defense and ensure the safety of its members in the region,” the May 30 press release said.
